Robert CAHEN
SANAA, PASSAGES EN NOIR
Chapelle de Beaurepaire, square Aimé Coulaudon

The images were filmed in Sanaa, capital of Yemen, where women veiled in black pass through a narrow alleyway. The fleeting but repetitive aspect of the retouched image gives the film a hypnotic character that is reinforced by the choice of music by JS Bach, an extract from the “St. John Passion”. In addition to the work on the notion of passage, the artist depicts an unexpected exchange between two cultures.

Robert Cahen is a video artist, director, composer by training. A major figure in the field of video creation, coming from the confines of the arts, he is a pioneer in the use of electronic instruments.
